Finnish consumers want to eat more fish – making it easier is the next step

Fish has a strong place in Finnish food culture, and consumer interest remains high. Recent survey results suggest that many Finns would like to eat fish more often, yet everyday barriers still prevent that intention from turning into action.

For the seafood industry, this highlights an important opportunity: growth is no longer driven only by awareness of fish’s health benefits. Consumers already understand those benefits. The challenge is making fish fit more naturally into modern lifestyles.

Convenience increasingly drives food choices

Today’s consumers expect food solutions that are quick, simple and predictable. While fish is widely appreciated, it is often perceived as requiring more planning than other protein options.

Questions such as How do I prepare it? How much will it cost? Will the whole family like it? can influence purchase decisions long before a consumer reaches the seafood aisle.

As a result, convenience has become one of the most important factors driving category growth. Products that reduce preparation effort and remove uncertainty are more likely to become part of consumers’ regular shopping habits.

Rainbow trout continues to strengthen its position

The survey also reflects the growing popularity of rainbow trout among Finnish consumers.

Its mild flavour, versatility and suitability for everyday cooking make it a natural choice for many households. Unlike products reserved for special occasions, rainbow trout fits easily into weeknight meals, whether prepared in a pan, oven or incorporated into salads, bowls and pasta dishes.

For retailers and producers alike, this trend demonstrates the value of offering products that combine quality with ease of use.

Predictability matters

Consumer research consistently shows that perceived price can be just as influential as actual price.

Many shoppers find it difficult to estimate the true cost of fish products, which can create hesitation at the point of purchase. Transparent pricing, consistent product formats and easy meal solutions can help lower this barrier and encourage more frequent fish consumption.

The same applies to product quality. Consumers increasingly value consistency and reliability, knowing what to expect every time they purchase.

Supporting the future growth of fish consumption

If the goal is to increase seafood consumption, the industry must continue focusing on solutions that make fish easier to choose, prepare and enjoy.

At Finnforel, we believe that innovation in aquaculture should not only improve production efficiency but also help make fish a more accessible everyday choice for consumers. By combining controlled land-based farming, reliable supply and consumer-friendly products, the industry can help close the gap between consumers’ intentions and their actual purchasing behaviour.

The demand is already there. The opportunity lies in making fish the easy choice.
